How Appointments and Referrals Work at BC Women’s Hospital
BC Women’s has many specialized programs, so there is no single appointment process for the entire hospital. Referral criteria, booking teams, clinic hours and patient eligibility vary by service.
Identify the service you need
Start with the exact clinic or service name. Examples include maternity programs, gynecology clinics, reproductive mental health, medical imaging, surgical services and specialized pregnancy clinics.
Check whether a referral is required
Many BC Women’s programs require a referral from a physician, nurse practitioner, midwife or another eligible health professional. Some programs have different eligibility or self-referral rules, so check the individual service page.
Have the referral sent through the correct route
Your health care provider should use the referral form, fax number or electronic process specified by the individual BC Women’s program. Incomplete referrals can delay review.
Wait for the clinic to review the referral
For many programs, the clinic reviews eligibility and then contacts the patient directly if the referral is accepted. A submitted referral does not automatically mean an appointment has been booked.
Use the clinic number for appointment changes
Once you have an appointment, use the direct clinic number on the booking notice for cancellations, rescheduling, preparation questions or arrival instructions.
Confirm location and preparation
Before travelling, check your date, time, entrance number, floor or room, identification requirements and any instructions about medications, food, fluids or testing.

BC Women’s Maternity Urgent Care Centre
This is not a general Emergency Department
BC Women’s Maternity Urgent Care Centre is a specialized 24-hour service for pregnant patients registered to deliver at BC Women’s and patients who delivered there and are up to six weeks postpartum.
If you are not pregnant and need emergency care, BC Women’s directs you to the nearest Emergency Department or to call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.
If you have an urgent obstetrical concern and cannot reach the Maternity Urgent Care Centre, contact your maternity care provider immediately. Call 911 when the situation is life-threatening.
Giving Birth at BC Women’s Hospital
You generally cannot choose BC Women’s for delivery by simply calling the hospital and making an appointment. Eligibility and pre-registration are handled through maternity providers and hospital criteria.
Have an eligible maternity care provider
Patients normally need a physician or midwife who has admitting privileges and delivers babies at BC Women’s, although specific eligibility pathways also exist for certain patient groups and specialized programs.
Complete pre-registration
BC Women’s says eligible patients should be pre-registered by their doctor or midwife after 16 weeks and before 32 weeks of pregnancy.
Allow time for review
The hospital reviews pre-registration forms and informs the care provider of the decision. BC Women’s says this review may take up to five weeks.
Use Entrance 97 when coming in labour
Patients arriving to give birth are directed to the Admitting Entrance, door 97, where a nurse assesses the patient and baby and determines the next care location.
BC Women’s Hospital Parking, Transit and Accessibility
BC Women’s and BC Children’s share the Oak Street hospital campus. Paid parking is available across several lots, and current parking information should be checked before your visit because rates can change.
